Today we watch as a long freight train consisting of 42 cars makes it way around my garden railroad. The freight is managed by three SD-45 locomotives (the two in the lead are Conrail while the pusher is Norfolk Southern NS). The three locomotives are controlled via the AristoCraft Revolution system to MU them together. The helper was really necessary since the train would derail at the curve at the top of the hill. The three locos on the front were enough to pull it up the grade,but the weight around the curve would pull the lead cars over. Thus,the helper on the rear to reduce the amount of weight that the lead cars have to handle. All cars seen in this video have body-mounted kadee couplers. This lets the train better handle the stress of the heavy weight and steep grades. This has been my longest stable freight so far. I've run longer,but not as reliably as this,I think due to the kadee couplers and the helper. As I convert more cars to the body-mounts I hope to try again someday to break 50 cars and perhaps 60 one day. The train made about 10 laps in this setup without a single hiccup before I had to put it away since it was getting dark. In my book,that's some reliable trains!
